New Facebook Koobface Malicious Worm Warning
There have been new warnings about a Facebook “worm” – a virus which works its way through your Facebook contacts and attempts to use social engineering to get them to click on a link which, in turn, infects their computer. 4TM’s team has come across instances of “Koobface” on Facebook in the last week.
The link appears to come from a friend, and says something neutral such as “You look funny in this new video”. Clicking on the link tells the user they need to update their version of Flash to play the video: if they proceed their machine is infected.
If infected, the worm will intercept all web traffic, which could result in personal information being disclosed or redirection to another malicious site. It also has the potential to add malicious components at a later date. Clever, but nasty.
Facebook are working to improve their security systems to detect instances of the worm, but they’re taking their time – it’s been around since August. So the message is: on social networks, as on the rest of the web, take care what you click on.
