Facebookers Defect to Multiply? Social Media Sites To Watch
You’ve probably heard of the exponential user growth of both Facebook (up over 200% on the year according to Nielsen, but slowing) and Twitter (up over 1300% on the year). Facebook now has over 175 million users, over half of whom use the service regularly. Social media is now more popular than email as a means of communication.
However, there are two other services on the up which we think will be worth watching.
Zimbio, described as “An Interactive Magazine With 15 Million Readers A Month” is growing rapidly in the US – slightly faster than Facebook albeit from a lower base. The service enables users to search for content and recommendations covering most common topics including cars, technology and current affairs. Members can comment and submit their own content to the site – effectively creating a user generated, online magazine.
Also hot at the moment is Multiply with a 12 million membership, growing at nearly 200% a year. This site “makes it easy to create, share and discuss your blog, photos, and videos with more of the people you know, and fewer of the people you don’t”. It ultimately has a similar purpose to Facebook, but could become very significant over the coming months.

Facebook has focused on status updates rather than content in an attempt to compete with upstart Twitter (despite Twitter still not having a viable business model). However, a recent unscientific poll on Facebook suggested 94% of users were unhappy with the changes: something which could ultimately drive them to sites like Multiply.
Multiply has potential through its simplicity – Facebook has also been criticised for an increasingly complex and often unusable interface. Multiply has simple tabs for sharing music, photos, videos, your calendar and your reviews.
Social media users are notorious for a lack of long term loyalty to any given service, helped by them being free to the end user. Could Facebook users be about to go forth and Multiply?
