Swine flu Gordonstoun School Moray

Gordonstoun school in the middle of Swine flu scare

Yes I know, funny title for a social media post but watching the BBC news covering the news that the Queen cancelled her trip to the Moray boarding school made me go to Google and do a search on “Moray School” and “Swine Flu”

I’ve been busy today anyway doing searches for “Moray School” and “Private School” during one of my individual e-marketing / social media workshops with Anni Cole-Hamilton who runs an excellent private school near Inverness, the Moray Firth School, but more about that in my next blog post.

After watching the “Swine Flu” news tonight I checked the social networks on Gordonstoun school and came across several Facebook pages and groups, all not very up to date and one Gordonstoun Facebook page out of date and not set up properly. See page here.

A total of 237 fans, but page is set up not properly and no postings. Fans have posted items but are not visible and as the lack of interaction was obvious the fans got frustrated and started to shout at the page. Another Gordonstoun group I found has almost a 1000 members but again, the interaction is poor. There is a posting on swine flu started by someone asking what’s happening, but no answer from the school….

This is the danger of getting involved with social media and not knowing what to do with it or how to maintain it. If not handled well, It can actually more harm a business or organisation then it will help. And this is exactly what I’ve advised Anni today, apart from a lot of other things, It’s great to get involved with social media as a business, great opportunities to connect with existing and potential customers, improve customer service and ultimate generate more sales, but only do it when you have the knowledge and the resources.

Other techniques and tips I’ve covered with Anni of the Moray Firth School today (and I’m sure this post will show up in Google alerts for her) I will post later this week. So keep coming back.

In the meantime, hope the Swine Flu scare will turn out false alarm and the Queen will visit beautiful Moray and Gordonstoun school later this year.
