<p>For example, when you arrive at your local Starbucks you can &#8220;Check In&#8221;. FourSquare lets your friends know where you  are and you can &#8211; if you check in more than anyone else &#8211; become mayor of that venue! Any business can take part, and there&#8217;s no charge for becoming a &#8220;venue&#8221;.</p>
<p><strong>FourSquare have now introduced new tools for business owners. </strong>A business can now &#8220;claim&#8221; its venue. FourSquare can be configured to provide &#8220;specials&#8221; to customers. For example, if anyone &#8220;checks in&#8221; 3 times or more you can offer them 10% off their bill. Or you could offer free coffee to your mayor! It&#8217;s effectively a fun, free, loyalty based scheme, and something every consumer facing, physically located business should consider.</p>
<p>Businesses are offered statistics about how often people have checked in, peak times and so on.</p>

Engaging with people, listening to people, providing people with valuable information, help or support.</p>
<p>It makes social media a fantastic tool for supporting an event, conference or festival. They are, after all, all about people:  fans, enthusiasts, specialists and practitioners.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not just advance marketing, although the effect of tapping into networks of like-minded individuals can be incredibly powerful. It also runs right through an event, pulling people together, sharing ideas, collecting feedback and spreading the word. Afterwards those connections can be maintained and built upon, adding value.</p>
<p>The 4TM team have supported a number of events in the past, including festivals, a virtual whisky tasting, conferences as well as our work for individual organisations. We really love this type of work, and the benefits are clear, so we&#8217;ve decided to put our services together into an effective package making it easy for event organisers, PR companies and sponsors to engage with us and find what will work for them.</p>

<p>Hundreds of comments have been added to their Facebook page today (19 Mar 10) since lunchtime, with more arriving every minute. The page has over 90,000 fans, although it is clear many joined only to attack the company.</p>
<p>Comments include:</p>
<blockquote><p>shame on you! You are causing deforestation and trashing orang-utan habitat</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>here&#8217;s two chocolatey fingers up to Nestle</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>All publicity is good publicity except in this case. Losers.</p></blockquote>
<p>A similar campaign is now running on Twitter, with around 10 posts per minute on the topic.</p>
<p>Although not yet confirmed to be directly related, the <a href="http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=NESN.VX#chart1:symbol=nesn.vx;range=1d;indicator=volume;charttype=line;crosshair=on;ohlcvalues=0;logscale=on;source=undefined" target="_blank">Nestle share price</a> has fallen since the social media backlash started.</p>
<p>Is this bad news for companies thinking about social media? That probably depends on the company.</p>
<p>If you genuinely care about your customers, their concerns and how happy they are then no &#8211; social media is the perfect way for people to understand your values and that you care, even when something goes wrong.</p>
<p>However, if it turns out your values are open to question, expect people to use social media to question them. And they&#8217;ll do this whether your business is engaged in social media or not.</p>
