Another great Mashable article on the power of Twitter search.

I use the Seesmic Twitter application myself with different keywords enabling me to connect with like minded people that tweet about “Tourism”, “Whisky”, “Speyside”, “Moray”, “Inverness” and of course “Social media” When discussing social media and Twitter with businesses and organisations I always make them aware of this search feature as this can enable them to keep an eye on their online reputation but even more important to improve their customer service.

It has never been so easy for businesses to connect with their online customers, asking for feedback, react on negative comments, product development are just a few possibilities that are now easy and cost effective (meaning cheap!) to implement for any organisation. The only thing that’s needed is a change in management mind-set….

University offers Social Media Master’s Degree

Birmingham City University is to offer a one year Master’s degree course in social media.

The Daily Telegraph quotes the course leader: “In my opinion, the course does entail synoptic research and scholarly activity, which are the fundamental criteria for Masters degrees.”

“It’s very relevant and very scholarly. It’s a new course, but its importance is unquestionable.

For those who don’t currently have a year to spend on a master’s degree, our 2 + 1 day Social Media Practitioners’ Course might be more relevant.

Social Media Democraphics – Latest

There was some discussion at our recent Lochaber seminar in Fort William around the democraphics of social media. Could grown adults really be spending time on Twitter?

The reality is surprising. The median age by site (via Social Media Today):

* median age of a twitter user is 31
* median age of a myspace user is 27
* media age of a facebook user is 26
* media age of a linkedin user is 40

In fact, according to Quantcast, over a third of Twitter users are 35-49. Only 1% are 17 or under. Meanwhile, nearly 30% of Bebo users are 17 or under; still – 20% are aged 45-55.

Social Media for Independent Film Makers

Social Media Orkney: Sandy Sanday Podcasts

I’m heading to the beautiful island of Sanday to work with local school children and business leaders. The topic will be podcasting: workshops to discuss and demonstrate how we can use this simple means of distributing audio programmes to give a flavour of the island to a wide audience. It’s going to be exciting – I’m particularly looking forward to the range of ideas from young people on the Island on how audio can be used creatively.

Sanday is in the Orkney Islands – North of Kirkwall – with sandy bays, wild flowers to make any botanist tremble with anticipation and birds like golden plovers and turnstones. Sadly it’s going to be a flying visit – literally with a 6 minute flight from the main island. I’ll be compiling my own podcast of the trip which we will share with you here.

New Social Media Resources Page and Briefing

To help follow up our public seminars and workshops, and to provide some background information, we have created a resources page with links and information.

It is designed to provide practical tools for getting started with social media; we still recommend that strategy creation and management be developed together with a social media specialist – to pick a random example: 4TM!

We have also added a three page briefing note targeted at business managers and owners who are trying to work out how social media may impact on their business and find out more about the social media landscape. 4TM can also provide personal briefings face-to-face or online via conference or telephone.
